Inflammation and brain: how inflammatory processes influence physiological and pathological functions of the central nervous system

Recent advances in neuroimmunology demonstrated that molecules, signaling pathways, cellular processes and activities that were previously thought to belong to the peripheral inflammatory system exist and are functional in the central nervous system. Neuroinflammatory activities are now known to modulate both physiological and pathological events. In this Thematic Series we collect studies and reviews that highlight the central role of neuroinflammation in causing detrimental changes in neuronal activity and neural networks as well as in mediating neuroprotection under specific conditions.
