Cardio-Ankle Vascular Index

The cardio-ankle vascular index (CAVI) is a new index of the overall stiffness of the artery from the origin of the aorta to the ankle. CAVI is a key tool for the improvement of preventative medicine as this index can estimate the risk of atherosclerosis. This Thematic Series highlights the current and future potential of this index in our understanding of how CAVI can be negatively influenced by arteriosclerotic diseases, such as coronary artery disease, carotid arteriosclerosis, chronic kidney disease and cerebrovascular disease. The Series also considers coronary risk factors, such as hypertension, diabetes mellitus, dyslipidemia and smoking, as well as how CAVI can be positively influenced by lifestyle modifications such as smoking cessation.
