Pathophysiological Understanding of Rheumatic Fever and Rheumatic Heart Disease
RHD is an acquired heart valve disease, triggered by cross reactivity of anti-Group A streptococcal (GAS) antibodies with host proteins, whose protein epitopes mimic GAS antigenic epitopes. Anti-GAS antibodies have been experimentally cross reacted with myocardial sarcolemma proteins such as myosin, tropomyosin, intermediate filament vimentin and extracellular matrix (ECM) proteins, laminin which mimics the sequence of the N-Acetyl glucosamine, and group M peptide epitopes of GAS. This Collection pools together updated evidence and guide further research as per the NIH recommendations to eradicate RF and RHD.
