Dove Medical Press Retains carboNZero Certification

Last year, Dove Medical Press became the first medical and scientific publisher to become carbon neutral by measuring, managing, reducing, and mitigating the emissions they can’t reduce by purchasing verified carbon credits. Today, Tim Hill, publisher at Dove Medical Press, announced that the publishing operation of Dove Medical Press has retained carboNZero certification.

Dove Medical Press meets the requirements of carboNZero certification having measured its greenhouse gas emissions in compliance with the requirements of ISO 14064-1:2006, committed to managing and reducing its emissions and neutralized its remaining unavoidable emissions through the cancellation of an appropriate number of verified carbon credits.

The emissions for the 2011-2012 period were verified at 10.75 tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalents. This is equivalent to the emissions created from driving around 45,000km in a medium sized petrol car.

According to Hill, “We are committed to sustainability and making a difference. When we stopped printing and distributing printed journals around the world in late 2008 we believed that we could operate our business sustainably. The carboNZero certifications are confirmation that we can operate a scientific, technical and medical publishing business sustainably. carboNZero certification helps us to manage and reduce our carbon emissions and lets our authors know that by publishing with us they are supporting sustainable business practices that won’t harm the planet.”

The carboNZero program is an internationally recognized Greenhouse Gas certification scheme—commonly referred to as carbon footprinting – for organizations, products, services and events, offering optional mitigation strategies through the provision of credible and verified offsets. The carboNZero program was established in 2001 by Landcare Research New Zealand Limited, one of New Zealand’s leading Crown Research Institutes, owned by the New Zealand government. The program is based on over a decade of solid research on climate change, greenhouse gas measurement and carbon monitoring.

carboNZero acting CEO Dr Ann Smith praises Dove Medical Press’s commitment to leading their industry in taking responsibility for the greenhouse gas impact their organisation has. “It is reassuring to see a company like Dove Medical Press making an honest obligation to the impact they have. This achievement should be celebrated by everyone at Dove Medical Press and we look forward to seeing how this leadership evolves in their sector.”

“These leading initiatives are great to see. Not just seeing results from clients when they reduce their carbon footprint, but also when they reduce their costs as a result and New Zealand and overseas businesses become leaner and meaner. Those success stories really motivate the team," she says.

Dove Medical Press is a privately held publisher of 100+ open access peer-reviewed journals across the broad spectrum of science, technology, and especially medicine. Dove was founded in 2003 and has offices in the United Kingdom and New Zealand, with an active presence in the USA and a network of agents in Europe, the Americas, and Southeast Asia.
