One Health Initiatives: Making the Case for Sustainability

Recognizing the connections between the human-animal-ecosystem interface means a healthier world for all. The One Health concept is not new, but has become more imperative in recent years. For example, animals play an important role in our lives; however, close contact with animals and their environments provides more opportunities for diseases to pass between animals and people. The One Health approach can prevent outbreaks of zoonotic disease in animals and people, improve food safety and security and economic reliance on livestock production, reduce antibiotic-resistant infections, improve human and animal health, and help to protect global health security. This Collection gathers experiences from regional, national, and global One Health initiatives, with a variety of impacts and benefits across the human-animal-ecosystem interface.
