Dr. Robert H. Howland is Associate Professor of Psychiatry at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine and an Attending Psychiatrist in the Mood Disorders Treatment and Research Program at the Western Psychiatric Institute and Clinic in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He also is Medical Director at the SPHS Behavioral Health Program in Monessen, Pennsylvania. Dr. Howland graduated from the University of Minnesota School of Medicine in 1986, completed his residency training and a clinical research fellowship in psychiatry at the University of Pittsburgh in 1991, and has received board certification in general adult psychiatry and geriatric psychiatry.

Dr. Howland is a Distinguished Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association. His clinical and research interests have included the use of psychopharmacology, psychotherapy, neurostimulation therapies, and other novel therapies in the treatment of mood disorders, with a particular emphasis on chronic and treatment resistant forms of depression. Dr. Howland is Psychopharmacology Section Editor for the Journal of Psychosocial Nursing and Mental Health Services. He has authored or coauthored more than 175 articles, book chapters, and other publications, and is currently an investigator in a number of funded clinical research studies.
