I have been trained heavily in establishing consistent models and assessing outcomes in animal models of spinal cord injury (SCI) and traumatic brain injury (TBI). In general, my research has focused on understanding the progression of pathology and neurological dysfunction following central nervous system (CNS) trauma and disease. My work heavily emphasizes biochemical, cellular and morphologic and functional aspects of pathology and recovery of such diseases and disorders. Currently, motor neuron degeneration and progressive peripheral neuromuscular system pathology in animal models of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) are a prime area of interest and focus. My overall and future goals are to expand upon my previous experience in CNS trauma to understand the neuroimmunologic mechanisms of neuroprotection and neurodegeneration using animal models of peripheral nerve injury and motoneuron disease.
