Dr Gary Johanning

Dr. Johanning received training in nutritional biochemistry at the University of Missouri-Columbia. He completed a postdoctoral fellowship at the Pew Center for Molecular Nutrition and the Department of Biochemistry, Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine, Cleveland, OH. At Case Western, he cloned and sequenced the promoter-regulatory region of the dihydrolipoyl dehydrogenase (E3) subunit of the pyruvate dehydrogenase complex, and studied regulation of expression of the E3 gene. After moving to an Associate Professor position at The University of Alabama at Birmingham, Dr. Johanning began to focus his research on folic acid and cancer, with a particular emphasis on folic acid and resistance to cancer chemotherapy. Dr. Johanning then accepted a position as an Associate Professor in the Department of Veterinary Sciences at The University of Texas M. D. Anderson Cancer Center, where he continued his nutrition research.  He has received research grant funding from the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine in the National Institutes of Health for his studies of folic acid and chemotherapy resistance. He also has a research interest in early nutrition and mammary tumorigenesis, and the role of nutrition in viral integration and persistence.  Dr. Johanning is currently the Program Director - Viral Oncology & Immunology in the Center for Cancer & Metabolism at SRI International.
