Dr Nulens is a clinical microbiologist at the General Hospital Sint-Jan in Bruges, Belgium since 2005.


He finished his studies of medicine at the Free University of Brussels 1996. Between 2001 to 2004 and 2004 to 2005 he worked as a clinical microbiologist in the University Medical Centre Nijmegen and Maastricht University Medical Centre respectively in The Netherlands.


During his PhD thesis research at the University of Maastricht, The Netherlands, he showed the genetic diversity of methicillin susceptible and methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus in the Meus-Rhine region, where an intensive patient transfer and care between Belgian, Dutch and German hospitals exist. He calculated the hospital costs to contain and treat MRSA blood stream infections in the Maastricht University Medical Centre.


He is a member of the Superior Health Council, a division of the Federal Public Service of Belgium, where he deals with containment guidelines of multi-resistant organisms guidelines in hospitals.
