Professor Tonini is the Head of the Department of Medical Oncology, Director of the School of Medical Oncology, Director of PhD program in Medical Oncology and Director of the translational laboratory in Medical Oncology at the University Campus Bio-Medico, Rome.

He is a member of the advisory board of AIOM (Italian Association of Medical Oncology), and an active member of ESMO (European Society of Medical Oncology) and ASCO (American Society of Clinical Oncology) and is the Editor-in-Chief of Expert Opinion on Investigational Drugs and a member of the editorial board of numerous scientific journals such as the Future Oncology and Colorectal Cancer.

Professor Tonini is the author of more than 300 papers, mainly focusing on clinical and molecular aspects of gastro-entero-pancreatic tumors and breast cancer. Current fields of investigation are clinical and molecular aspects of solid tumor (gastrointestinal and breast cancer), supportive care in cancer and angiogenesis.
