Dr. Xiaoyu Liu is a Senior Scientist in the Rare Disease and Neurobiology Research Unit at Biogen Inc. He obtained his Ph.D. in Biosciences from The Ohio State University in Columbus, OH, USA. He completed postdoctoral studies at Florida Atlantic University, FL, USA. During his Ph.D. study, he discovered euflammation, which refers to the type of low-level peripheral inflammation under neuro-immune quiescence, and demonstrated its therapeutic potentials in tumor and neuroinflammatory indications. His postdoctoral work unveiled ultra-low IL-1R1 expression on multiple CNS cell types and elucidated how cell type specific type 1 interleukin 1 receptor (IL-1R1) contributes to physiological and neuroinflammatory functions across different neurological disorders.
He joined Biogen in 2021 and now is leading pipeline program and target identification in multiple autoimmune diseases and neurodegenerative diseases including progressive MS, SLE/lupus nephritis and Alzheimer's disease. His research focuses on the role of innate immune responses and glial biology in CNS and peripheral inflammation. He is also leading the antibody discovery in targeting and delivering drugs across the blood brain barrier.
