Dean Smith is Dean of the School of Public Health at Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center in New Orleans and Professor of Health Policy and Systems Management. He is also Professor Emeritus at the University of Michigan School of Public Health where he had previously served as Senior Associate Dean for Administration and Professor of Health Management & Policy. Professor Smith was also a resident consulting economist at Pfizer, President/CEO of an HMO and a consultant to many pharmaceutical companies and health plans.

Professor Smith is committed to a line of teaching, research and service that provides a better understanding of the financial aspects of working with and working in health care delivery and financing organizations. He has published more than one hundred and thirty scientific papers and supervised more than fifty doctoral dissertations. He is Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Health Administration Education and serves on the editorial boards of other journals.

Professor Smith’s research has been funded by the National Institutes of Health, the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and other entities. Currently funded research includes analyses of programs to reduce the economic burden of asthma, sponsored by the MacArthur Foundation and the Merck Childhood Asthma Network. He received his bachelor’s degree in economics from the University of Michigan and his doctorate in economics from Texas A&M University.
