Wing-Kin Syn is an attending Gastroenterologist/Hepatologist and Physician-Scientist at the Ralph H Johnson VA Medical Center and the Medical University of South Carolina, and is the honorary head of the liver fibrosis group at the Institute of Hepatology at Kings College London and visiting professor at the University of the Basque Country in Bilbao, Spain. He completed his medical and research training in the UK and USA, and his laboratory research is currently focusing on the pathophysiology of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) and mechanisms of tissue fibrogenesis. Specifically, his team is evaluating the roles of osteopontin and thyroid hormone signaling in regulating liver disease outcomes. Clinical research focuses on improving the treatment and outcomes of patients with NAFLD, through cross-sectional and prospective studies, as well as participation in clinical trials, and has developed an integrated multi-disciplinary clinic to provide holistic medical care to patients with NAFLD. He a member of the organizing faculty for the 2017 EASL NAFLD summit.
