Dr Sotiria Palioura is Professor of Clinical Ophthalmology at the Bascom Palmer Eye Institute, University of Miami Miller School of Medicine. She is a cornea, cataract, and ocular surface disease specialist whose work bridges clinical excellence with translational and global ophthalmology. Her research and clinical interests encompass ocular surface tumors, ocular surface inflammatory disorders, regenerative and reconstructive surgery of the anterior segment, and advanced imaging technologies for corneal and ocular surface disorders.
Dr Palioura received her MD and PhD degrees from Yale University and completed her residency in Ophthalmology at Harvard Medical School and the Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary. Following her fellowship in Cornea and External Diseases at the Bascom Palmer Eye Institute (BPEI), she joined BPEI as adjunct faculty engaged in patient care, teaching, and international collaboration. She serves on multiple committees of the European Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons (ESCRS), including the Cornea Committee, Education Committee, Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Working Group, and Cornea Research Working Group.
Dr Palioura has delivered invited lectures and instructional courses across Europe, the Americas, and Asia, and has authored numerous peer-reviewed publications and textbook chapters. Prior to rejoining Bascom Palmer full-time in April 2025, she led a busy anterior segment practice in Athens, Greece, and held visiting professorships in Cyprus, USA (BPEI and Yale University) and Argentina, where she contributed to ophthalmic education and curriculum development.
