Dr Judith Johnson is a Reader in the School of Health Sciences at the University of Manchester and Director of Manchester Catalys. She holds a PhD in Clinical Psychology from the University of Manchester and a Clinical Psychology Doctorate (ClinPsyD) from the University of Birmingham. Dr Johnson is a registered Clinical Psychologist with the Health and Care Professions Council and a Chartered member of the British Psychological Society.
In 2024, she received the May Davidson Award from the British Psychological Society, recognising clinical psychologists who have made notable contributions to their discipline within their first decade of qualified practice.
Dr Johnson's research centres on healthcare workforce wellbeing, burnout, communication, patient safety, and psychological resilience. Her work has attracted funding from organisations including the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR), British Medical Association, Society and College of Radiographers, and the Burdett Nursing Trust. She has published over 105 peer-reviewed articles, co-edited two books and delivered invited and keynote talks at UK and international conferences.
Her research has contributed to professional guidelines for organisations such as the World Health Organization, UK Society of Radiographers, and British Medical Ultrasound Society. Dr Johnson's work has been featured in national media including BBC News, The Guardian, and The Independent.
She supervises doctoral students and has examined research degrees both nationally and internationally. Dr Johnson serves on editorial boards, reviews for funding bodies including UKRI and NIHR, and provides peer review for numerous academic journals. She is a Trustee of the Sir Halley Stewart Trust and has previously held roles promoting equality, diversity, and inclusion within higher education.
