Professor Veronica Swallow PhD, MMedSCi is Professor of Child and Family Nursing and Healthcare, Sheffield Hallam University, UK. As a registered adult and sick children’s nurse and qualified HE teacher with extensive NHS leadership experience, she moved to academia mid-career and leads/co-leads multidisciplinary, international research at the HE/NHS interface

Professor Swallow’s research and teaching activity focuses mainly on:

-The ways children, young people, young adults, families/carers and health professionals share management of chronic/long-term conditions;
-Development/evaluation of complex, user-led self-management interventions (e.g. web and smartphone apps) to promote optimum health-care experiences for families, and optimum outcomes for patients living with chronic/long-term conditions;
-Promoting and supporting user involvement and ethical practice in health-care research, research capacity and capability building.

Professor Swallow advocates for active involvement of patients, parents and carers as participants, co-researchers and advisers on research projects. Her research includes mixed-methods, qualitative and participatory approaches, feasibility/full RCTs, surveys, and literature reviews; outputs have led to invitations to present international keynote and plenary lectures. She has authored 70+ manuscripts in high impact journals and is an Editorial Board member of the Journal of Family Nursing and the Journal of Pediatric Nursing.

Professor Swallow is an invited grant reviewer for major national and international funders including currently: Specialist Advisor for the Grantsmanship Review Service of the National Institute of Health Research; member of the Kidney Research UK charity, College of Experts; Chair of the Lift Off Grants for Patient Facing-Research Panel (2024-5) and member of the Research Assessment Panel, Great Ormond Street Hospital London charity; and a member of the UK Paediatric Nephrology Clinical Studies Group.

As recent past President (2019-2024) of the International Family Nursing Association (IFNA) Professor Swallow also founded and co-Chairs the IFNA UK & Ireland Chapter. She has received national and international recognition and awards for her child-health research activity and student education and is committed to teaching healthcare professionals about the application of multidisciplinary research evidence into practice to promote optimum patient outcomes. She has supervised six PhD students in her field to completion and externally examined 15 PhDs.
