Dr. Rune H. Christensen is a translational physician-scientist affiliated with the Danish Headache Center and Harvard Medical School-BIDMC. He serves on the Science and Research committee of the International Headache Society.
His work has revolved around multimodal, translational investigation of the nervous system in migraine and other headache disorders. His PhD work focused on the use of large-scale, advanced magnetic resonance imaging studies to elucidate the pathophysiological underpinnings of migraine and other headache disorders. This has demonstrated that migraine is associated with structural brain changes specifically in pain-processing centers and that migraine with aura is linked to neuroinflammatory signals within the visual cortex. As a Postdoctoral Research Fellow, he adopted specialized, preclinical electrophysiological investigation of the trigeminal system to decipher the genesis of migraine attacks. Apart from this, he is heavily involved in meta-analytical evidence synthesis related to the treatment, classification, and clinical presentation of headache disorders.
