Dr Chulhee Choi is a Professor and also a Chair of Optical Bioimaging Center at KAIST, Daejeon, Republic of Korea.

Dr Choi earned his MD and PhD from Yonsei University College of Medicine, and completed his internship and Neurology residency at Yonsei University Medical Center, Seoul, Korea. During his PhD thesis research in Microbiology, he demonstrated a possible role of astrocytes in the induction of apoptosis in the central nervous system. After his postdoctoral fellowship in the Cell Biology department at University of Alabama in Birmingham, he continued his research of role of astrocytes in apoptotic,, pro-inflammatory, and angiogenic signals in normal and cancerous brain tissues, at the same university as a Research Instructor. He began as an assistant professor in the Division of Molecular Life Science at Ewha Womans University, Seoul, Korea, and moved to KAIST as an Associate Professor. He is an active member of American Association of Cancer Research (AACR), and an editorial member of journal Cancer Letters.

Dr Choi’s present researches are focused on developing novel in vivo imaging technique and system for analysis of neurovascular function, and discovering potential drugable targets of malignant cancers using tumor microenvironment-specific gene analysis system based on in vivo-mimetic tumor models. And using bio-medical information technology and nanotechnology, identification of cancer specific markers or agents which is able to be used either for diagnosis or treatment is also ongoing. More recently, he is delineating the cellular and molecular mechanisms of the tissue-photon interaction induced by ultra-short pulsed lasers as a novel tool for biophotonic modulation of multiple cellular functions.

Dr Choi pursues freely active discussion and creative thinking. Besides academic and scientific activities, he also does every effort to foster the younger generation. Due to his pursuit of mentoring, he achieved ‘Best Lecturer Award’ of the department, multiple times.
