Dr Gulsum Kubra Kaya is a Lecturer in Human Factors at the Safety and Accident Investigation Centre, Cranfield University, United Kingdom, and Co-Editor-in-Chief of Risk Management and Healthcare Policy. She obtained her PhD from the University of Cambridge in Engineering, where her doctoral research focused on risk assessment and patient safety in hospitals and led to the development of a framework to support safer healthcare processes.
Dr Kaya’s research focuses on patient safety, healthcare risk management, human factors and ergonomics, safety culture, incident reporting and socio-technical approaches to improving complex care processes. She has experience in developing, applying and teaching system safety methods, with particular expertise in Safety-II, FRAM and socio-technical risk analysis.
Her healthcare research explores how system interactions, work-as-done and organisational conditions influence safety, resilience and decision-making in clinical settings. Her current interests include healthcare AI, digital technologies, safety assurance, evidence-based risk management and the use of systems thinking to support safer, more resilient and human-centred care.
