Dr. Gillian Chumbley is the Nurse Consultant for the pain service at Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust in London, where she professionally leads nurses working in both acute and chronic pain. Her role encompasses research, teaching and clinical practice. She has worked in pain management for almost 30 years, the last 20 years at Imperial.

Dr. Chumbley gained her PhD from St George's Hospital Medical School in 2001, where she investigated the patient's views of patient-controlled analgesia. She received a post-doctoral research grant from the National Institute for Health Research in 2010 to investigate whether ketamine could prevent persistent post-surgical pain. Her other research interests include the safe use of opioids for persistent pain, pain and microbiome and the safety of intravenous infusions. She lectures nationally and internationally in her research areas.

Gillian is a member of the organising committee for the National Acute Pain Symposium and sits on the Pain Council at the Royal Society of Medicine. She organises conferences for both of these institutions. She was recently part of the EFIC opioid task force producing European guidance on the use of opioids for chronic non-cancer pain.

Dr. Chumbley is a published author of book chapters and peer reviewed journal articles. She has also written national Pain Guidelines for the Faculty of Pain medicine and the British Pain Society.
