Professor Toshihiro Tanaka, MD, PhD is Professor and Chair of Diagnostic and Interventional Radiology at Nara Medical University, and Vice President of Nara Medical University Hospital. He serves as Director of the Japanese Society of Interventional Radiology (JSIR), Councilor of the Japan Radiological Society (JRS), and Executive Committee member of the Asian-Pacific Society of Cardiovascular and Interventional Radiology (APSCVIR).
Dr. Tanaka received his medical degree from Nara Medical University and completed his radiology training in Japan, including residency at Aichi Cancer Center. He was a visiting researcher at RWTH Aachen University, Germany, from 2009 to 2011, and also trained at Maastricht University Medical Center in the Netherlands.
His clinical and research interests focus on imaging diagnosis and interventional oncology, particularly transarterial chemoembolization (TACE), hepatic arterial infusion chemotherapy (HAIC), and tumor ablation for hepatocellular carcinoma. He is also actively engaged in basic and translational research, including the development of novel embolization devices and imaging technologies. He holds multiple patents related to interventional devices and has contributed to the development of innovative technologies such as emulsification devices, arterial infusion ports, and advanced Angio-CT systems in collaboration with industry partners.
Dr. Tanaka has authored more than 150 peer-reviewed publications and has led multiple clinical and preclinical studies in liver cancer treatment. He has received several awards from major societies including JSIR, APSCVIR, SIR, CIRSE, and SIO, and currently holds leadership roles in multiple academic societies in Japan and internationally.
