Noteworthy Comment: The authors present a comprehensive review of the role of p53, the encoding TP53 gene in tumor formation and progression in the gastrointestinal tract with emphasis on microRNAs (p53 miRNA), which are small non-coding RNAs that promote mRNA degradation and inhibit the translation of their targets. MiRNAs as important components of the p53 network and the frequent genetic and epigenetic alterations of p53–regulated miRNAs in tumors represent attractive diagnostic and/or prognostic biomarkers.
