Steven Atlas MD is an associate professor of medicine at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine (New York, NY) and chief of the Cardiology/Hypertension/Endocrinology Practice at the James J. Peters VA Medical Center (Bronx, New York), where he also directs the Hypertension Research Laboratory. He earned his medical degree from the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, followed by postgraduate training in medicine at the New York Hospital-Cornell Medical Center, and research training in clinical and biochemical pharmacology at the National Institutes of Health. After returning to Cornell for additional clinical training in hypertension and establishing a research program, he spent the next 17 years as a member of the Cornell faculty in the practice and teaching of cardiovascular medicine as well as in both clinical and basic biomedical research, before moving to Mount Sinai in 1994.
Dr. Atlas is author of more than 200 publications concerning his clinical and investigative work. His research has focused on the renin-angiotensin system and the natriuretic peptide hormone family. He was one of the first investigators to study the ACE inhibitors, participating in the earliest clinical trials of captopril and subsequent agents. He has also published widely in the area of renin and prorenin biochemistry, and was one of the first investigators to isolate and characterize the atrial natriuretic peptide. Recent work has focused on the regulation of cardiac expression of angiotensin II and the natriuretic peptides, and he also remains active in clinical studies, including participation in major multicenter trials involving angiotensin receptor blockers, vasopeptidase inhibitors and, most recently, direct renin inhibitors.
Dr. Atlas has been an invited lecturer at medical and scientific meetings throughout the United States, Europe, Russia, and Japan. He reviews regularly for numerous medical journals and has been a member of several editorial boards and national research review committees (NIH, AHA and the VA). He is fellow of the council for High Blood Pressure Research and of the American Heart Association, and is a member of several other medical societies, including the American Society of Clinical Investigation, the Endocrine Society, and the American Society of Hypertension, where he is currently president of the eastern regional chapter.

Turgay Celik is working as Senior Researcher at Wake Forest University nowadays. Dr. Celik earned his medical degree from Gulhane Military Medical Academy. He completed his residency at Cardiology Department of Gulhane Military Medical Faculty, Ankara, Turkey. He proudly served 25 years as an physician and academician for Turkish Armed Forces. His main research interests include arterial hypertension, interventional cardiology, acute cardiac care, dyslipidemia and heart failure.
Dr. Celik has authored more than 450 publications (h index=41) concerning his clinical and investigative work. His research has focused mainly on arterial hypertension, clinical cardiology, cardiac imaging, endothelial dysfunction, coronary artery disease, heart failure and interventional cardiology. His clinical study analyzing Comparative effects of nebivolol and metoprolol on oxidative stress, insulin resistance, plasma adiponectin and soluble P-selectin levels in hypertensive patients has to this point received more than 345 citations. Dr. Celik has served as referee for a number of highly prestigious cardiovascular journals.

His research interests include dyslipidemia, stroke and cardiovascular disease prevention. He has authored more than 300 peer-reviewed scientific articles, which have received more than 6000 citations.
