Obituary:

Dear Colleagues,

It is with sadness that I report the loss of a leader in pediatric hematology/oncology. Dr Bob Arceci was killed in a motorcycle accident last week while on his way to the Phoenix Children's Hospital, where he was Chief of the Division of Hematology/Oncology and Co-director of Molecular Medicine at the hospital's Ronald A. Matricaria Institute of Molecular Medicine.

Bob trained at Boston Children's Hospital and Dana-Faber Cancer Institute as a pediatric resident and then as a pediatric hematology/oncology fellow in the 1980s. After rising to the rank of Associate Professor of Pediatrics at Harvard Medical School, he was recruited to Cincinnati in the mid-1990s, then to Johns Hopkins where he became Director and Professor of Pediatric Oncology and co-Director of the Leukemia Survivorship Program there. In 2013, Bob was recruited to Phoenix.  He was a leader in our understanding of both the biologic basis of, and treatment for AML and histiocytic diseases.

Bob was a mentor to many of us, both personally and through his tireless efforts on innumerable committees and as Editor-in-Chief of Pediatric Blood and Cancer.   He will be remembered as a caring, warm and engaging individual with a laugh that was recognizable from the other side of the building. He is missed already.
