"I and several co-authors submitted a data-based article to the Open Access Journal of Sports Medicine, and what a surprise! Four tough reviewers provided about six single-spaced pages of trenchant comments, ranging from the need for more data to excoriations about our imprecise use of the word "fitness". They also indicated relevant articles we had not included in our bibliography. After several months of hard work based on these reviews, we had a very much improved product to re-submit, which then was accepted for publication. This was one of the more constructive experiences in being peer-reviewed I've had in my almost 50 years in academia.
