A multi-disciplinary research training congruent with my extensive academic background have bestowed me a tremendous experience and expertise in the field of molecular ophthalmology/genomics exclusively inflammatory degenerative diseases of the retina, bone, vascular system and mucosa studying the molecular mechanisms of disruption of immune homeostasis in chronic degenerative diseases.
As a PhD graduate at the National University of Singapore, I had accrued expansive academic and technical skills. During my PhD thesis research, I worked on gene expression changes in glial and neuronal cancer cell lines due to neurotoxins using microarray and varied technology platforms of genomics and proteomics. During the post-doctoral training at the National Eye Institute-NIH, I have merged my long-standing interests in retinal degenerative disorders with my expertise in molecular biology and bioinformatics to explore the potential use of Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor-B for treatment and prevention of retinal and neuro- degenerative diseases specifically Retinitis pigmentosa.
Successively, as an early-stage independent investigator, I focused in studying the mechanistic role of various signaling factors (GPR81,GPR91, Sigma-2 receptors, Sirt3) in iron overload (inflammasome & oxidative stress) diseases namely hemochromatosis, Age-related Macular Degeneration, Diabetic Retinopathy etc. using in-vitro and in-vivo models employing state-of-the-art molecular biology techniques including but not limited to Transcriptomics/RNA-seq (NGS) profiling, Microarray, microRNA, Bioinformatics data analysis, real time qPCR, Flow cytometry, IF, Confocal imaging, Westernblot etc.
Besides these research endeavors, I peer review manuscripts for several scientific journals and also serve as a consulting editor and permanent member in the journal review board.
