Dr. Jie Xu currently serves as a principle investigator in Genomics Institute of Novartis Research Foundation in San Diego, California, USA. Dr. Xu’s primary interest concerns the molecular mechanisms of mechanotransduction. He is responsible for managing research programs to produce novel scientific discoveries in diseases areas where mechanical forces play crucial roles in pathophysiology. Dr. Xu is also leading drug discovery efforts to uncover novel compounds and biologics that modulate activities of mechanosensitive receptors and ion channels, aiming to develop novel drugs and therapies.
Dr. Xu studied taste perception in Drosophila during his Ph.D. training, focusing on the receptors and ion channels underlying the basis of glucose sensation by Drosophila larva, as well as the neural regulation of glucose sensation by Neuropeptide F and TRPA ion channel. Dr. Xu received his postdoctoral training in Scripps Research Institute in San Diego, California, USA, where he studied the mechanically-activated ion channels and receptors, illustrating the role of mechanosensitive channel Piezo1 in developing vasculature in mouse embryos.
