To mark May Measurement Month, we have selected a collection of articles published in our Integrated Blood Pressure Control journal that highlight the impact of
hypertension and the importance of blood pressure management.
The effect of aged garlic extract on blood pressure and other cardiovascular risk factors in uncontrolled hypertensives: the AGE at Heart trial examines the effects of garlic supplementation on blood pressure. Ried et al. studied the impact of daily aged garlic extract on 88 participants with uncontrolled hypertension over the course of 12 weeks. Their results suggested that aged garlic extract is effective in reducing peripheral and central blood pressure in a large proportion of patients with uncontrolled hypertension. The authors suggest that it also has the potential to improve arterial stiffness, inflammation and other cardiovascular markers in patients with elevated levels.
Effectiveness of continuous positive airway pressure in lowering blood pressure in patients with obstructive sleep apnea: a critical review of the literature looks at the comorbidity of hypertension and obstructive sleep apnea. Borges et al. discuss previous studies evaluating the impact of continuous positive airway pressure on blood pressure in patients with sleep apnea. The authors highlight the urgent need to identify predictors of blood pressure response to continuous positive airway pressure and the importance of precision medicine.
Current best practice in the management of hypertensive disorders in pregnancy highlights the impact of preeclampsia, which is responsible for between 9-26% of maternal deaths globally. Further dangers presented by preeclampsia include preterm delivery and maternal and neonatal morbidity. Townsend et al. state that rates of eclampsia are increasing and new discoveries in the pathophysiology of preeclampsia could lead the way for new methods of prevention, screening and management.
