Dr. Pariya L. Fazeli (Wheeler) is an Associate Professor in the University of Alabama at Birmingham School of Nursing, with a secondary appointment in the Department of Psychology. After completing her PhD in Developmental Psychology from UAB in 2012, she completed a postdoctoral fellowship at UC San Diego until 2015 when she returned to UAB. Dr. Wheeler's work over the last decade has been funded by the National Institutes of Health, the National Academy of Neuropsychology, and the Alzheimer’s Association.

Her program of research is focused on promoting successful cognitive aging phenotypes across diverse health disparities populations including people with HIV and African American/Black persons living in the Deep South. Protective factors that Dr. Wheeler examines in her work include physical activity, diet, and psychological resilience. Dr. Wheeler teaches courses in the UAB SON Doctoral Program and mentors students, postdocs, and junior faculty within and outside of UAB. Both her mentoring and scholarly collaborations are nested within interdisciplinary teams.
