Professor Russell Taichman

Russell S. Taichman D.M.D., D.M.Sc., Professor in the Department of Periodontics and Oral Medicine, University of Michigan.  Dr. Taichman completed his undergraduate education at the Villanova University with a BS in Biology in 1982 and received his DMD from the University of Pennsylvania in 1986. In 1990, he received both his certificate in Periodontology and a D.M.Sc. degree in Oral Biology from Harvard University. From 1990-1992 he was a Post-Doctoral Fellow in Molecular Immunology at the University of Pennsylvania's School of Medicine under the direction of Dr. John C Reed. He joined the faculty of the University of Michigan School of Dentistry in 1992 as an Assistant Professor. He has served on the Dental School’s advancement promotion and tenure committee and has chaired the IADR Fellowship and AADR's Hatton Awards Committees.

Dr. Taichman serves as the Director of the University of Michigan Scholars Program in Dental Leadership (UM-SPDL), and has designed and implemented a Mentoring Program for the Department of Periodontics and Oral Medicine. He was named the Instructor of the Year by the Dental Hygiene Class of 1997 and won the UROP Faculty Recognition Award for Outstanding Research Mentorship, 2003. His teaching responsibilities are in the vertically integrated clinics, and directs courses in Periodontics for the Dental Hygiene Program, and one at the Undergraduate Level. He serves as the Departmental Director of Research, where most recently his focus has been in identifying osteoblast-specific factor(s) that supports hematopoiesis. His work has expanded to understanding the mechanisms used by tumor cells to metastasize to the bone marrow, and is currently exploring the identity and function of mesenchymal stem cells.


Professor Zhanming Liang

Dr. Zhanming Liang PhD, MSc, MB BS, serves as Associate Dean of Research Education and Associate Professor in Health Systems Management and Policy. Dr. Liang was medically trained and worked as a physician, planning and evaluation consultant and senior manager before embarking her academic career and completed a PhD (health reforms and management workforce development) in 2007. Since then, Dr. Liang has become a leading researcher in management competency and management workforce development in the health sector with expertise in healthcare quality and patient safety, project planning and evaluation, evidence-informed decision-making, and health system design and improvement. She has trained many managers and leaders working in different health sectors in developing their management capacity in Australia and South-East Asia for the past decade. As President of the Society for Health Administration Programs in Education, she has played a leading role in shaping the health management workforce capacity development in Asia Pacific.

The Management Competency Assessment Tool (MCAP Tool) that Dr. Liang and colleagues developed and validated has been used to assess the competence of middle and senior level managers and leaders working in the health sector in Australia and many other countries providing evidence to guide management capacity building in the system, organisation and individual levels. She is currently supervising 8 PhD candidates and expanding the management competency study to the Veterinary Industry. Her current research projects also include building capacity of mid-level management in the prevention of burnout amongst frontline service staff; project management in health and community care – application, challenges and career pathway, and integrating a management capacity building approach in district health planning.

Dr. Liang has published substantially in the areas of leadership, management and health system development including the book entitled 'Project management in health and community services: getting good ideas to work' which has been adopted as a textbook by many Master of Public Health and Health Administration Programs in Australia..


Dr Pavani Rangachari

Pavani Rangachari, Ph.D., CPH, serves as Professor of Healthcare Administration and Public health and Director of the Master of Healthcare Administration (MHA) program in the School of Health Sciences at the University of New Haven. Her expertise is in health policy and administration, including healthcare organization, financing, health disparities, and public health. Her special interest lies in the implementation of innovation and change in healthcare organizations. Dr. Rangachari holds an M.S. in Health Management & Policy from the School of Public Health at the University at Albany, State University of New York (SUNY), and a Ph.D. in Public Administration & Policy, from the Rockefeller College of Public Affairs & Policy at the University at Albany, SUNY. While completing her graduate studies, she also gained extensive work experience in the healthcare industry, with service in leadership roles at both a state hospital association and a community hospital.

Dr. Rangachari has received independent research grants as Principal Investigator from the U.S. Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) and has published numerous primary-authored articles in the fields of healthcare management, leadership, health informatics, and public health. Her scholarship has contributed towards the: 1) identification of evidence-based management strategies for successful innovation implementation in healthcare organizations and 2) development of policy implications for consistent implementation of evidence-based and patient-centered care practices to promote population health. Her research projects have also contributed towards improving healthcare practices and outcomes at her study institutions. Dr. Rangachari’s scholarship has been recognized at a national level with the "Best-Theory-to-Practice Paper Award" from the Academy of Management Healthcare Management Division and nomination for the "Distinguished Paper Award" from the American Medical Informatics Association.

Dr. Rangachari is Certified in Public Health (CPH) and is an elected member of the Alpha Gamma Chapter of the Delta Omega Public Health Honor Society. She has served on a variety of journal editorial boards and grant review panels for federal agencies, including the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, National Institutes of Health, National Cancer Institute, and AHRQ. She currently serves as Associate Editor for BMC Health Services Research, Associate Editor-in-Chief for the Journal of Healthcare Leadership, and on the Editorial Board of the International Journal for Environmental Research and Public Health, and the Journal of Hospital Management and Health Policy.
